XLR Microphone Chain Planner

Describe your mic, any inline booster and your interface using what their manuals say. You get separate verdicts for the analog path, phantom power routing and the computer connection.

Confirm exact-model manuals. A plug that fits does not guarantee a working or appropriate electrical path. Unknown ribbon or phantom combinations never get a “supported” verdict.

How it works

Every verdict is independent. Analog path: the mic’s balanced XLR output (male on the mic, so a female-to-male cable) must reach a mic preamp. Phantom routing: what the mic manual says (required / tolerated / must not receive) is combined with whether the interface supplies +48V and whether an inline booster needs and passes it. Computer: the interface must list your OS. A passive XLR cable never converts analog audio to USB; the interface does that.

Worked example

Condenser mic (manual: phantom required), no booster, interface with an XLR preamp and switchable +48V, macOS listed as supported: all three verdicts are documented OK — turn on +48V for that input.

FAQ

Do dynamic mics need phantom power?

Most do not, but the exact mic manual is what counts. The planner uses what your manual says, not the mic type.

Do I need an inline booster?

Not automatically. Whether you need more gain depends on your mic’s sensitivity, how loud the source is and your preamp. Some boosters also need phantom power themselves.

Can an XLR-to-USB cable replace an audio interface?

Only if it contains a documented preamp and converter. A passive cable cannot turn an analog mic signal into USB audio.
